He, with twelve, went down,
stood in a flat space.
Heaps of learners round,
ring-ins came (in case)
from Jerusalem
City - capital,
in the South they come
they have journeyed well.
From Judea State,
coastal regions too,
Tyre and Sidon’s fate:
to send people who
came to hear him and
to be healed of their
maladies. They planned
to touch Jesus’ where
they could, for a pow’r
came from him and healed
ev’ry one he now
contacted - for real.
Those troubled by bad
spirits, were released.
Jesus eye-balled glad-
ly learners (at least).
He spoke strange things to
those who listened up:
“Bless'ed are all who…”
and then “Woe!”’s erupt:
‘Blesst are you who
* are poor, for your
rule is much more -
God’s rule’s in store,
and that’s for sure!
Blesst are you who
* are hungry now,
you will somehow
be satisfied.
I have not lied!
Blesst are you who
* weep now, for you
will laugh, and do
a dance then, when
I come again.
Blesst are you who
* are hated by
people who try
to insult and
“Dis-” Son of Man!
Rejoice that day
because a great
reward’s in keep -
so with joy leap.
For that’s how their
ancestors cared
for the prophets
with no “Stop it!”'s.
“Woe to you who
* are rich right now,
comfort somehow
already got,
that's your whole lot!
Woe to you who
* live now well fed.
Life's more than bread,
and you will be
then, real hungry.
Woe to you who
* laugh now (no cares,
with no “Bewares!”)
Now, soundly sleep,
then, mourn and weep.
Woe to you who
* are praised, admired,
& thus inspired.
For that is why
false prophets try.
‘But to you who are listening I say:
- love your enemies,
- do good to those who hate you.
- bless those who curse you,
- pray for those who ill-treat you.
- If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other too.
- If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt too (be bold).
- Give to (everyone) who asks you(!) - (for fun),
- if anyone takes what belongs to you, don't demand it back.
- Do to others as you would have them do to you (you won't lack).
[Can you - the reader - see any connections between this list above, and the lists Paul and Peter give in their letters? - the fruit of the spirit (Galatians 5:19-26) , and the steps of usefulness (2 Peter 1:3-15).]
He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there
and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon, who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all.
Looking at his disciples, he said:
‘Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied.
Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.
Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. ‘Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.
‘But
woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort.
Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry.
Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.
Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.
‘But to you who are listening I say: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who ill-treat you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you. Luke 6:17-31 NIVUK
