“If you want to come with me, you must give up yourself, take up your cross (every day), and follow me.” Luke 9:23
David & Janine today
have re-pledged their troth.
We here in this glad array
have loved one, or both.
We know love’s a tenuous,
fragile, living, thing;
yet as roots break apart rocks,
it has power to bring
one united empire down,
or grow two to one;
it makes patriotism frown,
its joy (more than “fun”)
can make “Father” or “Mother”
act like “horse” or “lion”,
make silly sounds. or smother
their own laughs. Sublime,
it doesn’t play for applause,
but to give pleasure;
it learns when to move, or pause,
to build its treasure.
But when speaking of “love’s laws”
it’s a kind of joke;
some don’t “get it” now because
they hain’t learned to poke
fun at themselves, and laugh lots
at their own pretence.
And love treasures (more than pots
of gold) “others”, hence
to this Dave & to Janine
we wish “all the best”
of love, more than “luck & dreams”.
Give your “selves” a rest!
Then he (Yeshua) told them (his disciples) what they could expect for themselves: “Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat—I am. Don’t run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how. Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self. What good would it do to get everything you want and lose you, the real you? If any of you is embarrassed with me and the way I’m leading you, know that the Son of Man will be far more embarrassed with you when he arrives in all his splendor in company with the Father and the holy angels. This isn’t, you realize, pie in the sky by and by. Some who have taken their stand right here are going to see it happen, see with their own eyes the kingdom of God.”
